A study from Arthritis & Rheumatism suggests that given the researcher's findings, there may be "a difference in the mechanism of disease pathogenesis between Chinese and Caucasian populations."
ERAP1 (formerly called ARTS1) and IL23R are two genes that cause ankylosing spondylitis.
The researches say that the recently discovered gene associated with ankylosing spondylitis, IL23R, does not appear to have a correlation with AS in Chinese. Althpugh, ERAP1 does, "suggesting a common pathogenic mechanism for the disease in Chinese and Caucasian populations."
