Alternative Treatments: Infrared Sauna

Posted on: 8/18/08

An article published in the latest issue of the journal Clinical Rheumatology entitled, "Infrared sauna in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis", states that, "infrared treatment has statistically significant short-term beneficial effects" in both AS and RA.

According to Wikipedia, infrared sauna, "is a sauna that heats its occupants with heaters that emit far infrared radiant heat. Unlike traditional Finnish Saunas, infrared saunas do not use steam, (which heats the air, and thereby the user) but instead use infrared radiation to directly heat the user." Traditional sauna is thought to help reduce chronic pain in conjunction with other therapies, according the benefits of sauna as listed on Wikipedia. These benefits have been shown in such studies as "The Effects of Repeated Thermal Therapy for Patients with Chronic Pain" - click here for the abstract.
